Edward L. Hasnerl

Reverend Edward L. Hasnerl, 91, of Knox, answered his call to meet his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. He was born on March 23, 1935, in Knox, Indiana, to the late Charles F. and Violet (Leonard) Hasnerl. A longtime resident of the area, Ed devoted his life to faith, family, and service, leaving a lasting impact on his community through his leadership, compassion, and unwavering commitment to others. Ed was a respected community leader whose influence reached across many facets of local life. He served on numerous boards and contributed his time and talents to a wide range of community initiatives, always striving to improve the lives of those around him. His dedication was recognized with the prestigious Henry F. Schricker Service Before Self Award, and he was honored as a Sagamore of the Wabash by former Indiana Governors Otis Bowen and Robert Orr. A man of many talents, Ed was deeply involved in local business and media. He was the owner and editor of The Starke County News, vice president of Starke County Publishers (now The Leader), and co-owner of the Knox Theatre and the TeePee Restaurant. He also served for many years as executive vice president of the REMC, helping guide the organization with integrity and vision. Ed’s voice became a familiar and trusted presence in the community through his work at WKVI radio, where he served as news director for many years. He was especially well known and beloved as the host of the daily commentary, “Talking of Many Things,” where he shared thoughtful reflections that resonated with listeners throughout the region. Above all, Ed was a devoted servant of God. He faithfully answered his calling to ministry, serving as pastor of Eagle Creek Community Church for many years, as well as pastoring several other congregations throughout his lifetime. His messages of faith, hope, and love touched countless lives and will continue to inspire those who knew him. Ed is survived by his son, Charles (Lisa) Hasnerl II; three granddaughters Cara (Cody) Carlson, Maria (Triston) Krueger, Cassondra (Ethan) Gniadek ; great-grandson Callahan Carlson; and two great-granddaughters Palmer and Kendall. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Eileen Kemble and Joyce Conkle. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. CDT on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at Eagle Creek Community Church, located at the intersection of County Roads 700 East and 25 North in Knox. Funeral services will follow at 6:00 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Eagle Creek Community Church or the Cheryl Lyn Welter Foundation. Ed will be remembered as a man of deep faith, steady leadership, and a servant’s heart—one who gave generously of himself and left his community better than he found it.
